FM pick: Apollo club sandwich
Palms mall ring road Ibadan
This is the first event of hopefully many series to come. It was inspired by an argument that steamed up at work over which particular meal was better. To have other people's opinion decided to bring along Jerry and Ama. Review would be based on :
We seem to have limited options for club sandwich in Ibadan. It's usually beef/chicken ham sandwich. Hopefully with the uprising industrialization we might start to enjoy better options soon.
First stop was Wimpy restaurant. Quite neat but not so quiet on this particular day. There seem to be a lot of expat here bonding and chattering. Ordered for the club sandwich which took about 25minutes. The sandwich was nicely layered with shredded chicken, ham, omelette, cabbage and complete with the standard sandwich fixings (lettuce, tomato, cheese) nestled between five lovely toasted pieces of bread. The crust brown gave it a nice presentation. Bread quality was very much okay. Ingredients ratio was well measured. However the sandwich wasn't so compact. It's a five layered sandwich with a lot of drama going on in between, keeping it together after a bite might be tricky. Overall taste was okay. Comes with a side of fries, coleslaw and pickle/gherkins.
Second stop: Apollo's bar and lounge
Cause we've been here before and know how long it takes their chef to prepare a meal, we made a call to order the sandwich almost 30minutes before we arrived.
We still had to wait for another hour. Not sure what goes on in their kitchen and why it takes so long to get a meal prepared.
The sandwich finally arrived. It was a light toasted four layered bread plastered with cheese, ham, pieces of boiled egg, and chickens. It had no lettuce, tomatoes, cabbage etc. Nothing fancy, just a simple sandwich. Presentation wasn't as great as wimpys. Bread quality was okay. Ingredients ratio was quite okay too. It had fewer drama and hence very compact. Overall taste was okay. Comes with side fries.
Tom: I personally prefer the Wimpy's club sandwich. It's attractive. I like attractive things. I like things that go the extra mile to catch my attention.
Jerry: bleh! It taste nice but it keeps scattering everywhere. I like the simplicity of the Apollo's sandwich. It's something I can eat with a chatty mouth and not feel indicted with sauce stains on my face. Their service is terrible though.
Ama: I like both but I'd prefer the Apollo's. It's so simple. It's something I can whip up by myself at home. I was hoping for a bit of tomatoes or lettuce under taste but it's okay I guess.
Tom: smh! You guys don't understand art. Wimpys sandwich was art. How can you not like nice things ?
Recommendation: They are both nice actually. They offer different taste satisfaction but achieve a common goal of being nice sandwiches. The Wimpy's offers more based on quantity and side option but still not justifiable for the high price. The Apollo's sandwich is compact and simple enough.
