You are on your bed, resting your legs on the wall as you listen to your favorite programme on the radio. There is no light and you’re planning to sleep early then suddenly, something catches your attention; the instrumental of a song playing in the background as the OAP rambles on. The instrumental sounds so good that when the song finally plays, you cannot but vibe along with the artiste.
Producers play the role of a nucleus when it comes to the process of making music. Essentially, what I’m saying is that a song can be good if the instrumentals are good and the artiste does a fair job, but it is unlikely that a song will be good if the instrumentals are trash regardless of how well the artiste sings or rap on it. There are many instances to back this up. Remember the popular Oppa Gangnam style song that went viral some years back? Or Terry G’s Free Madness even though the lyrics were mostly nonsensical.
Although producers in Nigeria don’t get half as much credit as they ought to, it would be untrue to say that things haven’t changed. The likes of Sarz, MasterKraft, Spellz, Kiddominant, Legendury beatz have effected some change in the music industry as they get recognition for their efforts on musical projects. This has most likely been a source of motivation for young creative acts to venture into music production.
Just as the music industry is experiencing a growth with the introduction of fresh talented artistes, there has been a rising wave of new generation producers who have massively contributed to the production of chart-topping songs. One can confidently say that the future of Nigerian music industry is in good hands when it comes to music production.
I compiled a list of new generation Nigerian music producers who have made an impact in the industry from last year till this moment.
When you hear this signature at the beginning of a song, you can beat your chest that the song is a certified banger. Speroach Beatz gained maximum attention with Peruzzi’s For Your Pocket single (which later had a remix with Davido). He had been working with Peruzzi before the singer got signed on Davido’s DMW. However, things took a even bigger turn when Speroach made the beat for one of the biggest songs of the year, Assurance. He was also behind the production of the one of the best collaborations of the year, Amaka (by Tubaba and Peruzzi). Speroach beatz is fast becoming one of the most talented acts in the industry today.
It would be ridiculous to make a list of new generation music producers without making mention of Fresh VDM. The man has contributed immensely to DMW, from his work on DMW’s Back to Back to the biggest song in 2017, Davido’s Fia. He has produced for Mayorkun, Dremo, Burna Boy. Fresh VDM (VDM means Very Disturbing Music) is a musical genius. His beats have a special touch that makes an artiste’s job less difficult. He is the official in-house producer for DMW.
The most amazing thing about Killertunes is the versatility of his sound. If not for his signature, you’ll almost be surprised to find out that the same person who produced the instrumental for Kizz Daniel’s Yeba was also responsible for Olamide’s Motigbana. He has produced some of the biggest songs in the music industry including Duncan Mighty and Wizkid’s Fake love, Dj Spinall and Kizz Daniel’s Baba, Mayorkun and Davido’s Bobo. Killertunes has established a name for himself in the music industry within a short period of time, and looks like he still has so much to offer.
‘Krizbeatz the drummer boy’, as his signature on instrumentals say, is easily one of the most talented producer that the music industry has seen. The 23 year old producer stunned Nigerians with the magical instrumental of Tekno’s Pana. He went ahead to produce Skales’ Temper, B Red’s Fall For You, Sean Tizzle’s Wasted. He has worked on many musical projects and artistes including Wizkid, Seyi Shay, Lil Kesh, RunTown, Omarion and Drake
Phantom has been doing a madness ever since he produced one of Aquila’s biggest song, Ayepo (by Airboy rado). The Aquila records official producer however became well recognized after his remarkable work on Burna’s Ye. He also produced one of the two singles that Wizkid dropped recently, Master Groove. He once interned under Sarz, one of the veterans of music production in Nigeria. Phantom beats is definitely an act to watch out for in the music production scene.
Many Nigerians could not help but ask who was behind the production of Starboy’s Soco - one of the biggest songs this year. The song redefined Nigerian pop sound and we can attribute most of the credit to the instrumental which was produced by Northboi. He is also responsible for the production of Mayorkun’s hit single, Posh. The talented producer is on his way to becoming one of the producers on every artist’s producer wishlist
Other new generation music producers who have been causing an upset in the game include Rexxie (produced Chinko’s Able God), Runtinz (Kizz Daniel’s 4days), Psycotune (Starboy Terry’s Bia).
